. ๐Ÿ“ˆ It starts with an assessment of what could happen to ETS prices, especially if CCS and green hydrogen โ€™t work out, e.g. insufficient supply. ๐Ÿญ Finally, the paper also calls for using a bigger share of ETS date on why and especially how CDR can help guarantee the long-term stability and effectiveness of the ETS

  • ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Could carbon removals save the EU ETS?

Europeโ€™s flagship climate policy - the EU ETS - has come under heavy attack lately. ๐Ÿ“ˆ First, letโ€™s start with the status quo: the cost of carbon in the ETS is going to increase - by design price will not soar. ๐Ÿซฐ According to Sultanti et al (2024), CDR could yield a 10-15% reduction in ETS Verbist et al (2025) also show up to 50% savings, depending on the integration design. ๐Ÿชจ And this is cost savings of up to โ‚ฌ37b/year by 2050 with a CDR portfolio cost of โ‚ฌ150/t. ๐Ÿ’ฒ So can CDR save the ETS

  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Please donโ€™t break the ETS, Chancellor Merz! ๐Ÿ›‘

๐Ÿ’š The European Emission Trading System (EU ETS) might well be the most effective decarbonisation policy But the whole premise of the ETS is that the cost of emitting a ton of CO2 will keep increasing, as free ๐Ÿ“‰ Now that very foundation of the ETS is being questioned, sending shock waves through the market as can be seen by the freefall of EU ETS Emission Allowance (EUAs) prices by 25% in just a month - from this would be: China is investing heavily and aggressively into its own ETS (already covering 15% of

  • ๐Ÿ‘‰ If you take part in one public consultation this year, itโ€™s this one ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ No surprises here: I believe compliance is the way to go for carbon removals and no more promising policy than the EU Emission Trading System (hashtag#EUETS) to generate large-scale demand. ๐Ÿ’ถ It is - by far - the biggest carbon compliance market in the world, generating more than โ‚ฌ40b/year. And that number is just going up given its design. ๐Ÿค” CDR could, and likely will, be integrated starting in 2031. While that would be great news in itself, what matters are the details: what CDR? How exactly? Which amounts? Link to CRCF or not? ๐Ÿ“„ The European Commission just published a consultation on the matter open until July 8th. It is short, however. Only 6 pages. I already had many of you reach out to me asking for advice. ๐Ÿ’ก For that reason, Eve Tamme and I decided to host a CDR Policy Scoop where we make sense of this consultation. Whatโ€™s in it, whatโ€™s not. How the process works. And - crucially - what you can do to shape the process. ๐Ÿ’ช This is a rare opportunity to be part of groundbreaking EU CDR policy from the get go! ๐Ÿ“† Tune in on Monday 28th of April at 9am PT / noon EST / 6pm CEST here on LinkedIn live or subscribe to our podcast: https://lnkd.in/dKDu_ghM โ‰๏ธ As always, drop your open questions and perspectives here in the comments to make this as interactive and impactful as possible. ๐Ÿฅณ On another note: the CDR Policy Scoop hit 1k followers - thanks everyone for being part of this journey!
