Europe’s flagship climate policy - the EU ETS - has come under heavy attack lately. 📈 First, let’s start with the status quo: the cost of carbon in the ETS is going to increase - by design price will not soar. 🫰 According to Sultanti et al (2024), CDR could yield a 10-15% reduction in ETS Verbist et al (2025) also show up to 50% savings, depending on the integration design. 🪨 And this is cost savings of up to €37b/year by 2050 with a CDR portfolio cost of €150/t. 💲 So can CDR save the ETS

🇪🇺 No surprises here: I believe compliance is the way to go for carbon removals and no more promising policy than the EU Emission Trading System (hashtag#EUETS) to generate large-scale demand. 💶 It is - by far - the biggest carbon compliance market in the world, generating more than €40b/year. And that number is just going up given its design. 🤔 CDR could, and likely will, be integrated starting in 2031. While that would be great news in itself, what matters are the details: what CDR? How exactly? Which amounts? Link to CRCF or not? 📄 The European Commission just published a consultation on the matter open until July 8th. It is short, however. Only 6 pages. I already had many of you reach out to me asking for advice. 💡 For that reason, Eve Tamme and I decided to host a CDR Policy Scoop where we make sense of this consultation. What’s in it, what’s not. Plus, this could open the door to temporary removals in the ETS. 💪 Instead, our focus should be on strengthening processes within the CRCF to give us full confidence in the interchangeable use of its units for the ETS
