🚰 Governments assume on-tap, large-scale CDR will save their net-zero plans
🏛️ This is my core takeaway from Harry Smith PhD’s (University of East Anglia) excellent doctoral thesis analysing 41 government Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) submitted to the UNFCCC. 🌍 As a reminder: LT-LEDS represent countries’ highest-level long-term climate strategies and therefore provide a clear window into current and future national climate policy. 📄 So what did the thesis find? First, a huge over-reliance on nature based removals vis-a-v

🚨🇪🇺 BREAKING: EU Parliament backs 2040 Climate Target 🇪🇺🚨
📥 Just a few minutes ago, the EU Parliament voted (379 Yes, 248 No, 10 abstentions) to adopt its position on the EU 2040 Target. 🎯Despite attempts by the right to water down the target to 83% – which was thankfully voted down and averted – it’s almost identical to the Council’s position from last week: 90% overall target, 5% international credits, up to 5% additional international credits at member state level, and a review clause every two years. 🌍 A notable difference, h

🔥 Hot Brussels insights: where is EU CDR policy heading? 🔥
🇪🇺 What a week it’s been for climate in Europe! Just wrapped up a few days of meetings across European institutions. My key takeaways: 👎 European climate ambition is weakening The big picture is not looking good. CEOs of Europe’s biggest companies are calling Ursula von der Leyen on a weekly basis, urging her to walk back on climate policy to keep European industry “competitive”. The result? The heart of European decarbonisation, our Emission Trading System (ETS), is shaki

❓"What's your target: is it to stop global warming or get rid of fossil fuels?"❓
💡 I had never thought about this as an either / or question and always assumed we can only stop global warming IF we get rid of fossil fuels. ✈️ In the latest CDR Policy Scoop, Robert Höglund and I got to go deep on the role of carbon removal in aviation and shipping. 🤔 One of the key arguments Robert makes is that our best shot at net-zero could be to focus on whatever solution has the lowest cost, e.g. CDR + regular jet fuel vs eSAF. Loved recording this one - go check it

🇨🇭 Want to make sense of Switzerland’s pioneering approach to CDR? 🇨🇭
⭐ Few countries have understood CDR as well as Switzerland. And some of its brightest civil servants have spent years designing cutting-edge CDR policy. 😍 Alongside my colleagues at @carbonfuture, we went deep into the topic and distilled everything you need to know into a beautiful, shareable policy brief. 🏆 Switzerland has created what most countries still lack: a clear, funded, and internationally connected framework for carbon removal. 👀 Check out the carousel for som
