๐ Where EU CDR policy actually stands right now
๐ช๐บ Just wrapped up a week of meetings and events across European institutions. Here are my hot takes on the TOP FIVE policy files for CDR: ๐ญ ETS: CDR integration is a given at this point, DACCS/BECCS only (initially) as well. The focus is shifting to other questions: within or on top of the cap? International credits Y/N? And - this is a big one - will there be specific quantities/volumes or will the Commission kick the can down the road? ๐ฏ National CDR targets: We fail

๐งก Thank you
๐๐ป Today, I was elected to serve three more years on the board of the Negative Emissions Platform. ๐ช๐บ CDR to date has been shaped by voluntary demand. The next phase - and where we unlock real scale - will be compliance demand, a story that will largely be written in Brussels and European capitals. ๐ฃ We need to make sure that this industry has a strong voice in this process, sharing on the ground operational experiences and ensuring that future policies are fit for purp

๐ฃ Europe should prioritise removals in its international carbon credit procurement
๐ช๐บ Just touched down in Brussels where I am joining my wonderful colleagues from the The Global South Carbon Dioxide Removal Coalition (GS CDR) to deliver this simple message to European policy makers. ๐ค Looking forward to two days packed with meetings across the EU Commission, Parliament, and Council to share our perspectives and experiences at this crucial moment in time. ๐ฏ By the end of the year, the Commission will deliver a proposal on the use of international credit

๐ช๐บ Canโt get enough of EU CDR policy these days
โ๏ธ After the buzz of the CRCF Days, I am heading back to Brussels. ๐ On June 2nd, I will be joining my colleagues from the The Global South Carbon Dioxide Removal Coalition (GS CDR) for meetings around town to discuss the role of CDR in Europeโs international credits ambitions. ๐ณ๏ธ On June 3rd, the Negative Emissions Platform (NEP) is hosting its annual general assembly where I am running for another three year term on its board. ๐ฌ On June 4th, NEP is organising its annual

๐ช๐บ Does the EU Buyers Club have what it takes?
๐ Yesterday, hundreds of carbon removers gathered in Brussels and online for the launch of the EU Buyers Club. Letโs start with the big, positive news: the Club has launched! ๐งจ In typical European understatement, there was no big bang, even some people in the room missed this important detail: there is now an open group of buyers, working together with the European Commission, selecting eligible European projects. The first offtakes are expected this year. The day itself -

๐ฅ Breaking: New CBAM rules could supercharge demand for Article 6 credits
๐ช๐บ Huge news coming out of Europe this week! The European Commission released a draft implementing act for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) covering the use of carbon credits. ๐ The punchline: Europe is looking to allow up to 10% of international carbon credits (Article 6) and what looks like unlimited domestic compliance carbon credits to be used to reduce CBAM levies for companies exporting to Europe. ๐ถ Why is this so big? Letโs do the maths: the CBAM - cur

๐ How much CDR could the EU ETS integration unlock?
๐ถ That is the billion euro question. A new study sheds light on this, and the numbers are big: 68-86Mt/year of durable CDR demand, easily >โฌ10b/year. ๐ช๐บ We are just 1-2 months away from the European Commissionโs proposal on how CDR is to be integrated into the worldโs largest emission trading system. Iโve seen a number of opinions on the potential impact on such an integration. ๐ However, to my knowledge, this is the first peer-reviewed paper modelling the exact demand th

๐ฆ Is carbon dioxide removal bankable?
โ
Yes, it is starting to be, finally! But some approaches more than others. ๐จ๐ญ That is my main takeaway from Zurich Climate Week and the Financing CDR Summit hosted by Carbonfuture, SIX, and Google. ๐ค Until now, most financing for durable CDR has come from venture capital. This works well for some approaches, especially tech heavy, high-risk, high-reward ones such as DACCS. But it has clear limitations: it cannot pay for large-scale projects and did barely touch more matur

๐ฃ A historic day for international CDR collaboration
๐จ๐ญ The Swiss government is undoubtedly leading - globally - on climate collaboration under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, having signed >15 bilateral agreements already. ๐ค This includes the first ever durable CDR Article 6 transaction with Norway. Today, in Climate Week Zurich, the Swiss and Norwegian governments are sharing their learnings and announcing some exciting news. ๐๏ธ Eve Tamme and I are on the ground in Zurich today recording a special episode of the CDR Pol

๐ฎ๐น Italy gets its own CDR association - but does it need it?
๐ On Tuesday, the Rete Italiana Rimozione Carbonio (RIRC) was launched amidst the beautiful 600 years old frescoes of the Scuole della Carita in Padova. ๐๐ป If you follow me, you know I love a CDR association. So much so, that Iโve personally founded my fair share in the CDR space and currently sit on numerous boards spanning geographies and technologies. ๐ค So do we really need another one? Is this leading to association overload and fragmentation for an already small s

๐ฐ More than ever: Letโs keep the finance rolling into carbon removal
๐ No, this is not another post on Microsoft. Instead, a suggestion: How about turning the page and focusing on what matters most now - ensuring continued purchases of and finance for CDR. ๐ธ One thing is obvious: we need to ensure that capital continues to flow into the CDR space. ๐ค If we were only able to gather them all in one place sometime soonโฆ ๐จ๐ญ Welcome to Zurich, one of the world's great financial hubs, which decided to host its first ever Climate Week from the

๐ข Carbon Removal Dream Job Alert ๐ข
๐ฉโ๐ป And, no, this is not an April's fools joke. Stripe is actually looking for an EU Market Development Lead to grow long-term demand for CDR in Europe. ๐ Why I got so excited when I saw this? Stripe - a catalytic buyer in its own right - is also the driving force behind Frontier , the world's leading CDR buyers club, which has been playing a central role in the growth of this industry. You'd be at the heart of where the action is currently at. โญ I also know almost ever

๐ฌ๐ง Is the CRCF fit for purpose? The UK government thinks so.
๐ฅ The last few days have been heated in the CDR policy world: two objections were raised in the European Parliament - one from the far right and one from socialists + greens - requesting the outright rejection of the CRCF methodologies (both did not pass). ๐๏ธ On top of this, some civil society actors - most notably Carbon Market Watch - have been rallying the troops against the CRCF for months. ๐ค It is thus not far-fetched to ask whether the CRCF is fit for purpose? โ๏ธ When Italy goes low, Denmark goes high
๐ค Is European industry losing its competitiveness because of the EU ETS, as Italy and many other countries are arguing? Not according to Denmark! ๐ช In fact, the relentless climate pioneer think the ETS is not going far enough. ๐ฉ๐ฐ Denmark just introduced a national CO2 tax of โฌ17/tCOโe in 2026, increasing annually to roughly โฌ48โ50/tCOโe from 2030 for ETS-covered installations. This means that facilities in Denmark will have to pay the ETS price PLUS the domestic tax. ๐ช

๐ช๐ธ Spain: Europeโs sleeping CDR giant?
๐ Today, Carbon Gap is releasing yet another gem: its Spain CDR Readiness Report. ๐ช The one line takeaway: no other country in Europe can match the sheer potential of Spain when it comes to CDR, yet the country is far from realising this potential. First, letโs look at why Spain is so well placed: โกAs fossil fuel prices soar, Spainโs bet is paying off: 55.5% of electricity renewables, with a target of 81% by 2030 building an industry expected to be worth โฌ308b and 560,00

๐ช๐ธ In case you needed one more reason to cheer for Spain todayโฆ
๐ While several EU member states are taking stabs at dismantling the ETS, Spain is coming out in its defense: President Pedro Sรกnchez explicitly described the EU ETS as the โcornerstoneโ of EU climate policy and opposes proposals to weaken or suspend the system. ๐คท Why would Spain take such a different stance to Germany, Italy, and many others? โก Already today, Spain is generating 56% of its electricity and 42% of its energy consumption from renewables. As a result, Spain i
