🖤 205 European plants delivered 170,000t of biochar carbon removal in 2025

🤩 As in previous years, Biochar Europe has just released their fantastic market report, which provides the best analysis of where the European biochar industry is really at.

🏛️ Tl:dr: BCR continues to demonstrate its technical maturity and ability to deliver. While growth has slowed down, capacity keeps being added. Clear policy incentives will be needed for BCR to truly scale and to incentivise use of biochar for BCR versus charcoal and especially metallurgy.

Now for those who want more details:

😮 There are now 30 biochar technology providers, with several of them operating at technology readiness level 9.

🏭 28 BCR production plants were installed and commissioned in 2025, with 8 plants shut down, leading to a European total of 205 plants live in 2025.

📈 Biochar production capacity for CDR has grown to 91Kt / year, of which 60Kt were actually produced, equating to 170,000t of carbon removed.

🔥 Biochar production overall amounted to 360Kt, of which 270Kt have gone to metallurgy and charcoal production.

📊 The CDR market segment is still growing at 15% YoY, but much slower than a few years ago (>40%).

➡ Overall: BCR is still clearly the most mature durable CDR approach in Europe, and the only one reliably delivering volume. However, some operators are struggling with their business cases, and additional political incentives are needed, ideally in the form of compliance market integration / ETS.

📣 A huge shout out to the team at Biochar Europe, and Hansjörg Lerchenmüller in particular, for their relentless efforts in creating this type of analysis and data. It is invaluable in helping us finance and scale the industry.

💬 What are your thoughts? Are you as bullish about BCR in Europe as I am?
