🎯 On July 2nd, the European Commission will reveal its proposal for the EU’s 2040 Climate Target. This is arguably the most important climate announcement of the year.
🤔 The original plan was a bold and uncompromising 90% emission reduction target. That plan, however, has been under sustained attack from parliamentarians and governments alike.
🔦 As a result, we are going to see “flexibilities” allowed, particularly in the form of international carbon credits. Word on the street has it we will see up to 3% of the 90% allowed through this.
👉 What about carbon removal? Many of us, including myself, have been advocating heavily for the inclusion of an explicit CDR target for 2040. This is essential to avoid mitigation deterrence and drive the scale up of the sector. Will we get it? Unlikely…
🎙️ There will be much to unpack! Make sure to tune into out CDR Policy Scoop the day after, where Eve Tamme and I will analyse the proposal and dive into all the details.
🗓️ Here on LinkedIn Live on Thursday, 3rd of July 9am PT / noon EST / 6PM CEST at: https://lnkd.in/dfrWbfDj
👇 Let us know what you expect from this proposal and share your reactions - we will feed them into our Live.
