💥🇪🇺Breaking: EU #AGRI Committee pushes for biochar carbon removal (#BCR) as permanent removal in

An important milestone has been achieved in advancing BCR with today's decision by the European Parliament's AGRI Committee. The adoption of their position on the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF) signifies a pivotal moment in recognising BCR's significant potential as a permanent carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) solution.

With 31 votes in favour, 6 against, and 2 abstentions, the AGRI Committee's opinion stands as a testament to the growing support for BCR as one of the most scalable and durable technologies in mitigating climate change.

Summary of the key achievements:

📖 The definition of 'carbon removal' has been revised to acknowledge the storage of atmospheric or biogenic carbon within lithospheric carbon pools, expanding the scope of carbon storage possibilities.

⚡️BCR is now recognised as permanent carbon removal on an equal standing with other CDR methods such as Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (#DACCS) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (#BECCS) .

🔎 BCR's vital role is accentuated by its explicit definition, further highlighting its significance as a valuable tool for carbon management.

⏰ Within Article 6, focused on 'long-term storage,' biochar has secured its place, emphasising its potential for permanent carbon sequestration.

📉BCR operators will be required to furnish robust scientific evidence that guarantees the prevention of carbon reversion from its solid form.

🌱In the context of carbon storage in products, biochar will not be classified as 'released' following monitoring if it remains securely bound in soil or a mineral matrix. Additionally, Annex I showcases biochar as a soil additive, a pivotal component of a diverse range of carbon farming activities.

This remarkable achievement marks a great step in getting BCR adequately recognised within the CRCF, paving the way for future applications such as integration into the EU Emission Trading Scheme (#EUETS).

👀Now all eyes will be on what the lead committee, #ENVI, is going to do before the parliamentary vote on the CRCF in October.
