🚨 Breaking: We have just passed 1,000,000t of durable CDR delivered 🚨

💪 What a moment of collective success. Anyone in the sector knows just what a monumental lift it has been to get to 1Mt today.

🚀 The speed has been remarkable: it took us over five years to get from zero to 500Kt, and only 15 months to double that to 1Mt.

💧 Before you say it: I know: it's a drop in the ocean. And the haters are going to be quick to point out that billions have been spent to make up for the equivalent of <2 minutes worth of global annual emissions.

📌 And - of course - they are right. But they are also really missing the point.

🏗️ The durable CDR industry did not commercially exist until 2019 and only really came into being in 2020-22. In just five years, over 700 companies have been founded, tens of thousands of people transitioned their careers, and countless policies have been passed.

🤩 That is nothing short of remarkable.

📈 So let’s flip the narrative around: CDR is growing exponentially, year on year, despite the head-winds climate tech is currently facing.

🤔 The right question to ask is: when and how do we reach 10Mt delivered? My bet: 2027. And when will we reach the first gigaton? Hopefully well before 2035.

👏 It takes a village to achieve such a historic milestone. But clearly some companies are leading the way, and they deserve a special shout-out to the top three:

🇧🇴 Exomad Green at 247Kt or almost 25% of all deliveries

🇮🇳 Varaha at 112Kt

🇧🇷 Aperam BioEnergia - Comercial at 90Kt

🪨 To state the obvious: all of these companies do biochar carbon removal (BCR) in the Global South. To anyone doubting the potential of BCR: the data speaks for itself.

🪵 Global South BCR will likely not get us to 10Mt on its own, and we will increasingly need and see a portfolio - still primarily of biomass carbon removal and storage methods (BiCRS), at least for the next two years.

🎉 Today, let’s take a moment to celebrate and tap ourselves on the shoulder. This is a big moment, and hopefully just a glimpse of things to come.
