🤫 Could this be the game changer for CDR no one talks about? 🤫

šŸŽÆ No surprises here: compliance is the way for me. It is what I work on day in day out. Today, I want to highlight the less well known - but potentially equally impactful - twin of the EU Emission Trading System (hashtag#EUETS).

šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (hashtag#CBAM) aims to prevent carbon leakage as a result of the ETS, by applying the same carbon tax on goods imported into the EU that would be subject to the ETS (admittedly with some restrictions).

šŸŒ The CBAM is essential to make carbon compliance work in the globalised world we live in.

šŸ’” As the CBAM is phased in next year, countries around the world are facing considerable hurdles to their EU export. Countries like Turkey and Egypt are particularly badly hit, but this also applies to India, Brazil, and many others.

😮 This is where CDR comes into play. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) estimates that CBAMs around the world could lead to 550Mt (!) of demand for CDR.

Allowing CDR to be used to lower the emission footprint of these imports can yield several benefits:

1ļøāƒ£ It would stimulate the creation of distributed, global CDR industries by providing significant monetary incentives.

2ļøāƒ£ It will provide a path for producers in the developing world in particular to keep exporting to Europe.

3ļøāƒ£ It will lead to CDR being scaled in geographies where it is faster, more cost-effective, and fairer to do than in the global north.

šŸ‘‰ While this looks good in theory, few actually understand the CBAM in depth (including myself). As such, I am thrilled to invite Dan Maleski - one of the world’s top CBAM experts - to the CDR Policy Scoop to make sense of this complex topic.

šŸ’š Eve Tamme and I will ask Dan all the hard question we have to figure out once and for all if the CBAM can hold on to the potential many like myself see in it. Or if - especially in the protectionist world we are increasingly living in - its days are behind it (although it just started).

šŸ“… Tune in on Monday 14th of April at 1pm EST / 6pm CET here on LinkedIn live and let us know what questions you have for Dan and on this topic: https://lnkd.in/dyPjqR2g
