🪑 Global South CDR Coalition takes a seat at the table in Europe 🪑

🤯 Did you know that 45% of all durable carbon removal to date came from the global South? And that the average price of these removals was less than half compared to Europe?

👀 I’ve seen this huge potential with my own eyes recently when I visited the world’s largest CDR company, Exomad Green in Bolivia. That is when I decided that companies like Exomad need a voice in Europe, and that Europe should use their removals to achieve its own climate ambition and targets.

🌎 And so the Global South Coalition was born: it brings together many of the world’s top CDR companies from the global South - across durable CDR technologies - with the aim to ensure access to Global North markets, starting with Europe.

🎯 Our first target: Europe’s Green Claims Directive (GCD), which will regulate the legitimacy of corporate environmental claims and is currently in trilogue negotiations. Why? Because it is the first piece of legislation that opens the door to non-EU CDR being used explicitly (in the Parliament’s position).

🤝 The Coalition spent two days in Brussels meeting with policymakers, sharing their perspectives, and making the case why the inclusion of global South CDR is a win/win, ensuring larger supply, lower prices, and more competition.

Our request is to support the Parliament’s amendment in the final version of the GCD, namely:

1️⃣ Explicitly allowing non-European CDR

2️⃣ Conditional on CRCF-equivalence

🚨 In an industry that is just getting off the ground, this would send a strong signal to investors and buyers that global South CDR has a role to play in Europe, while paving the way for the CRCF to become not just a European standard, but a global gold standard for CDR.

⁉️ Does this resonate with you? Keen to support or join the Coalition? Get in touch.

📣 Huge shout-out to Fiona Mugambi Wietse Vroom Francesco Guglielmi Maarten de Lange, Hedda Björck, Sasankh Munukutla for coming to Brussels. And Keiran Foster, Anneleen Ghekiere, and Federico Schroeder from Acumen Public Affairs for supporting us.

🌱 This is just the beginning. We have a lot more work cut out for us to ensure strong representation of the Global South in Europe’s strive for net-zero.
