On Tuesday, the Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA) held its inaugural assembly in Brussels, meeting with policy makers, NGOs, and - crucially - with each other.
🎯 Our objective is clear: establish EW as one of the most viable paths to reach net-zero in Europe (and beyond). How? Primarily by getting the European Commission to prioritise the development of an EW methodology within the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (hashtag#CRCF), ideally starting in 2024 and not late 2025.
Why? Here's a reminder on just how awesome EW is:
😯 In 2023, EW removed 30,000t of CO2. EWA members alone deployed rock that will sequester 100Kt in 2023 and aim to remove up to 2.5Mt by 2026.
💸 EW has a clear path to $100/t. Currently, prices are inflated given the massive investments into monitoring, reporting, and verification (hashtag#MRV). Once we feel comfortable moving to model-based MRV, costs will drop massively.
🚜 EW can replace lime, a well-established process used by farmers to manage pH levels (30Mt/year in the U.S. alone), providing farmers with a potential revenue stream and a much-needed path for agriculture to reach net-zero.
📈 EW’s scaleability is huge, given it builds on the foundations of one of the world’s largest industries: mining, which produces almost 9Gt (!!!) of tailings annually, much of which can be used for EW.
🔒 EW is permanent for tens of thousands of years.

😍 On a personal note, this is a huge moment of pride for me: Carbonfuture has been trying to mobilise the EW community for a long time. A year ago, I teamed up with Adam Wolf (Eion) and Matthew Clarkson, PhD (InPlanet) alongside Antonio Astolfi and Julian Jacobitz (FGS Global) to increase the momentum. Then earlier this year we were finally able to launch Enhanced Weathering Alliance (EWA).
🙏 Thank you to all the members who joined us on Tuesday: Hara Wang Rachel S. Isabella Corpora Charlie Hendry-Smith, Tony Oehm, Jonte Boysen, Silyan Ivanov, Simon Manley, Sam Davies, Eliot Booth, as well as all the EWA members who were with us in spirit.
