📊 [POLL] EU CRCF: what’s next? How will CRCF units be used? 📊
🇪🇺 Last week, my feed filled up with news of the EU adopting the first three methodologies to certify permanent removals (DACCS, BECCS, BCR).
👏 This is a huge milestone which should be celebrated.
🤔 However, the biggest question of all still remains: what will CRCF units actually be used for first/primarily?
🤷♂️ The central critique of the CRCF from day 1 has always been the lack of clear use cases. Without them, the CRCF risks being an empty shell, and many years of work go to waste.
So what options are there? Here are the main ones I see:
1️⃣ Voluntary carbon market: we could see buyers opting for CRCF units as a lower risk, more reputable option.
2️⃣ EU Buyers Club: the much touted initiative which the CRCF team at DG Clima is trying to get off the ground this year.
3️⃣ EU ETS: integration of CRCF credits (or a subset…) is likely to feature in the upcoming proposal.
❓ Or something else entirely? What do you think?
