Today, we are featuring Eion, a carbon removal company based in Oakland, California, scaling enhanced rock weathering (ERW) on working lands. Eion uses Earth’s natural mineralization cycle to safely, permanently, and verifiably remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
How does Eion operate?
🚜 Eion has developed an olivine soil amendment that efficiently captures carbon while acting as an agricultural lime replacement – it reduces soil acidity, seamlessly integrates into current farming practices, and can be applied using existing equipment.
🪨 Eion distributes the olivine (one of Earth’s most naturally abundant minerals) to farmers and ranchers, who then apply it on fields. The carbon absorption rate is nearly 1:1 – meaning for every ton of pulverized rock applied on fields, about 1 tonne of CO2 is removed.
🔎 Farmers and independent crop advisors test the soil before and after olivine application. Eion uses the data to measure carbon removal, and third parties can audit the results to generate high-quality, verifiable carbon credits.
What is Eion’s carbon removal strategy?
✅ Eion patented a direct measurement process to sample soil and determine the actual rate of rock weathering. This allows them to verify carbon removal and thereby unlock scalable offtake agreements. They hope their process can be used by others so that ERW can become a scalable climate solution.
📈 In 2022, Eion applied 500 tons of olivine. This year they spread another 10,500 tons. Their operations are laying the groundwork to remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide annually starting in 2030.
💵 Eion works closely with farmers, ranchers, and rural communities. Working with the existing agriculture system provides long-term skilled employment opportunities with local partners, supports overall soil health, and improves per-acre economics for farmers.
❓ What do you think about Eion’s CDR provision? What other CDR suppliers would you like me to feature in this series?
📣 Shoutout to Adam Wolf and Elliot Chang and the rest of the Eion team. I love the ambition of your work and your results speak for themselves. Onwards and upwards!
