This week: the state of fossil carbon capture and storage (#CCS) policy in Europe.

Writer: sebmanhartsebmanhart

As a reminder: fossil CCS is NOT carbon dioxide removal (#CDR). For a full refresher, see my post here: https://lnkd.in/dMczCUHp

Fossil CCS will play a big role in European (and global) #climatepolicy, particularly for sectors with hard to abate emissions such as #chemicals, #concrete, or #steel production. It will also build some of the infrastructure needed for engineered CDR methodologies such as #BECCS and #DACCS.

Over the last 4 months, we at Carbonfuture (with the help of Alexis Dunand) carried out wide-ranging research on where climate policy in Europe is at. We looked at all 27 EU member states + 4 non-EU states: 🇦🇹 🇧🇪 🇧🇬 🇭🇷 🇨🇾 🇨🇿 🇩🇰 🇪🇪 🇫🇮 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇬🇷 🇭🇺 🇮🇸 🇮🇹 🇱🇻 🇱🇺 🇲🇹 🇳🇱 🇳🇴 🇵🇱 🇵🇹 🇷🇴 🇸🇰 🇸🇮 🇪🇸 🇸🇪 🇨🇭 🇬🇧

💪 Fossil CCS is present across policies in almost all of Europe. It enjoys widespread support and awareness across most political parties.

💰Countries with a history of fossil fuel production (🇬🇧 🇳🇴 🇬🇷) have clearly seized the opportunity to create fossil CCS industries. The 🇬🇧 recently announced a £1 billion investment into CCS infrastructure.

🎯Nordic countries are the regional block who are leading the way, with all countries (🇳🇴 🇩🇰 🇫🇮 🇸🇪) making CCS a national priority.

🔥 Within the 🇪🇺, 🇳🇴 and 🇳🇱 are likely to be the powerhouses of CCS investing billions into infrastructure and signing bilateral agreements for the storage of CO2 with various other European governments.

🔎 What about 🇫🇷 and 🇩🇪? Both are taking big steps. 🇩🇪 is currently in the process of legalising the geological storage of CO2 at commercial scale. In 🇫🇷, president Emanuel Macron recently highlighted CCS as one of three key pillars to decarbonise industry. A CCS plan is expected before the summer.

📈 CCS could present a huge opportunity for growth and jobs. 🇭🇷 and 🇬🇷 seem to be leading the way in Southern and Eastern Europe, fitting CCS into their Resilience and Recovery Plans.

Does this resonate with your experiences across Europe? Where do you see the biggest potential?
