๐ฉโ๐ผ In a promising sign of continuity on climate policy, Ursula von der Leyen will take on a second five year term as the President of the European Commission. She received 401 votes in favour, passing the 383 she received in 2019.
โ So what does that mean? I was most interested in what von der Leyen was going to say on EUโs ambitious climate targets, particularly the upcoming 2040 targets, which many think might take a hit given the shift to the right of the EU Parliament.
๐ Von der Leyen intends to stick to the current plan and โprepare the way towards the 90% emission-reduction target for 2040 which we will propose to enshrine in our European Climate Law.โ
๐ญ She also announced a new โClean Industrial Dealโ to be developed in the first 100 days, with a focus on โsimplifying, investing and ensuring access to cheap, sustainable, and secure energy supplies and raw materials.โ
๐ Finally, she also suggested to introduce an Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act to help industries through the transition.
๐ While we are very thin on details, von der Leyenโs reelection coupled with her promising speech provide me with confidence that Europe can stay on track of its ambitious climate targets and - crucially - push for a 90% emission reduction targets for 2040.
