๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ Ursula von der Leyen was just re-elected and reaffirms EUโ€™s ambition to reduce emissions by 90% by 2040 ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ผ In a promising sign of continuity on climate policy, Ursula von der Leyen will take on a second five year term as the President of the European Commission. She received 401 votes in favour, passing the 383 she received in 2019.

โ“ So what does that mean? I was most interested in what von der Leyen was going to say on EUโ€™s ambitious climate targets, particularly the upcoming 2040 targets, which many think might take a hit given the shift to the right of the EU Parliament.

๐Ÿ’š Von der Leyen intends to stick to the current plan and โ€œprepare the way towards the 90% emission-reduction target for 2040 which we will propose to enshrine in our European Climate Law.โ€

๐Ÿญ She also announced a new โ€œClean Industrial Dealโ€ to be developed in the first 100 days, with a focus on โ€œsimplifying, investing and ensuring access to cheap, sustainable, and secure energy supplies and raw materials.โ€

๐Ÿ— Finally, she also suggested to introduce an Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act to help industries through the transition.

๐Ÿ‘ While we are very thin on details, von der Leyenโ€™s reelection coupled with her promising speech provide me with confidence that Europe can stay on track of its ambitious climate targets and - crucially - push for a 90% emission reduction targets for 2040.
