🤔 Can we leverage future ETS revenues for present day investments into CDR? Responsible Carbon Removal . 💶 The idea is not new: use European Investment Bank bonds backed by an ETS1 and ETS2 guarantee base to mobilise up to 200 billions of euros in green investment in the 2028-2034 installed capacity, and climate targets for the EU. 📆 In just under two weeks we will see the long-awaited ETS Now is the time to think beyond integration, and look at how the ETS can be leveraged for CDR more broadly

🤯 The Chinese emission trading system is a whopping 6x the size of Europe’s ETS and now covers 60% of It’s fascinating: ◾The ETS was launched in 2021, designed to support the national goal of peak emissions in 2030 (65% reduction vs 2005) and net-zero in 2060 ◾The ETS started with power (2021 - 5Gt - 40% of It’s quite different from the EU ETS. 🔎 For now, it is largely a monitoring tool. Yes, the Chinese ETS is still small in financial terms, reaching only CNY 18 billion in 2024 (€2b).

three institutions are writing the rules for our sector, including what role removals play in the EU ETS

And its impact goes way beyond BCR and the EU ETS. 🤔 Here is why: some groups are advocating forcefully that we should only allow CCS based CDR to be integrated into the ETS - so DACCS and BECCS. CRCF permanent removals’ units should be seen as good enough to be used in other regulations, from EU ETS , to the EU Green Claims Directive, etc. ✅ And, well, biochar carbon removal - after years of deliberations with hundreds of experts - passed this bar. 💚 So, yes, BCR should be integrated into the EU ETS. 📆
