🛑 Please don’t break the ETS, Chancellor Merz! 🛑
💚 The European Emission Trading System (EU ETS) might well be the most effective decarbonisation policy humanity has ever created: it has lowered emissions of industrial facilities in the EU by around 50% in 20 years and saving an estimated 2Gt already! 🇪🇺 And we are just getting started! But the whole premise of the ETS is that the cost of emitting a ton of CO2 will keep increasing, as free allowances and the so-called cap decrease. 💶 The ETS is also currently generating

💀 So apparently CO2 is not bad for humans and the environment - at least in the U.S.?
🏛️ Today is one of those days where it is hard to find the motivation to keep going: the Trump Administration - expectedly - moved to eliminate the EPA’s 2009 "Endangerment Finding” which de facto created the legal basis for a lot of climate policy in the U.S. 🪓 Under the guise of “deregulation”, this is the largest and likely most impactful attack on climate science by this U.S. administration to date. ❌ The EPA will no longer be able to effectively regulate the six major

🇩🇰 What happened to the €4bn Danish CCS subsidy?
🤨 I recently found out that 9 out of 10 pre-qualified entities withdrew their applications from this much praised fund, leaving a single contender for what is supposed to be a competitive, landmark fund. 🔎 So I dug deeper, and what I found provides really useful lessons for how we need to structure government funding for fairly novel technologies like CCS and CDR. 💰 Back to the start: the Danish government created a 28.7bn Danish Krona fund (€3.9bn) with the objective of c

🛢️ “Zero carbon barrel of oil” - really? 🛢️
🤬 That sentence triggers me too… 🤔 But - as so often in climate - reality is not black or white. The slogan is wrong, but the directionality isn’t. 🔎 Fossil fuels, like it or not, will be with us for decades to come (although definitely not forever as stated in this video - phase out is coming for you, O&G!). 🔥 Billions of barrels will be pumped and used, gigatons of CO2 and methane emitted. So the carbon intensity of each barrel does really matter. A ton is a ton after a

🚨 Breaking: Germany finally legalises CO2 transport and storage 🚨
🇩🇪 Today is the big day: a long time in the making, the German Bundestag finally amended its 2012 law which effectively banned the storage of CO2 (KSpG) with a new law allowing storage, but also transport of CO2 (KSpTG). 🚛 This is huge news, as it creates the foundation for Germany’s ambitious plans to become a leader in carbon management - CCS, CCU, and CDR - and also a key CO2 transit country in Europe. 🏗️ It also attached “overriding public interest” to the constructio
