🥳 2024 - what a year for CDR policy! 🥳

🌟 After a wonderful two week holiday, I wanted to kick off the year looking back at some of the highlights in carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#CDR) policy in 2024. There were so many to choose from, but here are my top three stand-out achievements:

🇪🇺 The EU’s Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (hashtag#CRCF) Regulation: in 2024, we saw the finalisation and formal adoption of the CRCF. On top of that, we start the year with draft methodologies for DACCS, BECCS, BCR, and the certification process. In policy speak, this is lightning speed and puts the EU in a formidable place to finalise methodologies this year and start certification of the first CRCF units in 2026.

📜 The United Nations Article 6: straight out of the gates, Article 6.4 - now known as the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (hashtag#PACM) - was adopted on day one of COP. Alongside significant progress on Article 6.2, this paves the way for the emergence of a global CDR market overseen by the UN, estimated to reach 250b/year.

🇩🇰 Denmark’s historical leaps: this small Nordic country with a population of just 6 million people made headlines on several fronts. First, it passed the world’s first livestock emissions tax. Secondly, it set-up a number of funds, from a $4.2b CCS fund (including CDR), to a $1.4b BCR fund (the equivalent of the US setting up $312b CDR funds…). Finally, it passed the world’s first BCR government strategy. Godt gået, Danmark!

⁉️ What are your 2024 CDR policy highlights? What did I miss? Please share in the comments.

Beyond policy, 2024 was also significant for me as I feel increasingly part of this passionate community of CDR professionals which is only growing stronger:

🗣️ On LinkedIn, my 241 posts were seen over 2.5 million times by over 450,000 people, and got 45,000 engagements. This is a testament to the thriving community we’re building. Thanks to everyone who engaged, commented, liked, shared, and debated with me.

💼 Committed to scaling this sector, I launched CDRjobs to support the transition of thousands, soon millions of people into CDR. In just 6 months, we logged over 2,500 CDR jobs, had 1,800 people sign up to our newsletter, and - crucially - already had several people find their dream job through us (comment if you are one of them!)

✉️ This year I also launched the GigaTen, my monthly curated newsletter of the top 10 things happening in CDR. The GigaTen has been read over 2,700 times by 800+ subscribers and now also includes a more in depth monthly video/podcast with Leila Conners.

💙 A huge thank you to all of you for being part of this amazing community - it only gets better together.

🔮 Now, enough looking back. 2025 will be a make or break year for CDR. I will be back tomorrow with my outlook on what I expect to be the key battles and policy decisions of 2025.
