🇧🇷 Here are a few mind-boggling stats about Brazil:
🟢 28% of the world’s biomass is in Brazil
🟢 93% of its electricity comes from renewable sources
🟢 The Parana Basin alone has a geological storage capacity of 270Mt / year
🟢 Terra Preta - the world’s first biochar - was used and applied 2,500 years ago in the Amazon
🟢 Some of the world’s biggest farms are in the Brazilian Cerrado, reaching a staggering 1,000 hectares / farm
🟢 Brazil was the first country in the world to develop and adopt a legal framework for the use of rock powders in agriculture
💪 Long story short: Brazil is uniquely placed to become a global powerhouse in carbon dioxide removal.
💚 CDR can help Brazil in two ways: first, to achieve its 2050 net-zero target and 2030 55% emission reduction target. Second, and crucially, to develop a sustainable, billion-dollar export industry with domestic manufacturing and value generation.
🤔 Why has it not happened yet? That is the million-dollar question I would like to pose to you all. Based on my conversations and research, I’d say it is a mix of the following:
1️⃣ Decision and policymakers simply do not know technological carbon removal
2️⃣ The emerging CDR industry in Brazil has not yet united to form a common voice
🚀 With COP30 around the corner, my call to action is simple: let’s make 2030 the breakthrough year for CDR in Brazil. Let’s rally the troops and share this compelling case with the right people. Brazil - and the world - will be better off for it.
🇧🇷 Vamos, Brasil. O seu tempo chegou!
