🤯 Did you know that the ocean covers 70% of the Earth and serves as its largest carbon sink, holding 42 times the carbon in the atmosphere?
💦 Marine-based carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#mCDR) is a portfolio of ocean-based CDR approaches which aim to enhance the ocean’s role in drawing down atmospheric CO2.
📜 At the end of December, the Removing and Sequestering Carbon Unleashed in the Environment (hashtag#ReSCUE) Oceans Act was reintroduced in the U.S. Congress by Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Paul Tonko (D-NY), Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR), and Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI).
💰 The bill authorises a total over $2.5 billion for research, monitoring, and standards development through FY2034 across several federal agencies and aims to position the United States as a global leader in marine carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#mCDR) technologies. The bill has been endorsed by many well-known industry names such as Carbon Removal Alliance, World Resources Institute, Carbon180, Ocean Visions, Carbon to Sea Initiative and Ocean Conservancy.
👶 Overall, the U.S. is still in the early stages of funding and policy support for ocean CDR, especially compared to land-based CDR efforts which have benefitted from billions in funding. Bipartisan bills like the ReSCUE Act - focused on oceans, a topic that can get policy makers excited across the isle - could progress even in the current administration. Having said that, Trump has indicated major changes to NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, one of the primary beneficiaries of this bill.
❓ What is your take? Does this bill stand a chance in the coming years?
