In case you missed it in the flurry of the craziness that is December, Tencent launched its CarbonX Program 2.0 to Accelerate Climate Tech Innovation at the end of last year.
😮 WAIT, WHAT IS THIS?
While last year’s first iteration of Tencent’s climate tech initiative focused on China, it’s now recruiting promising climate tech innovations from around the world and supporting them with catalytic funding (“tens of millions of dollars”) and resources.
🧐 WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR
CDR is one of their four application tracks, prioritising technology-based CDR solutions that ensure permanent storage. More specifically, they’re looking to support projects that:
🔒Demonstrate the ability to remove 100 tonnes of CO2/y at the pilot stage with a permanence of at least 100 years (but preferably 1000+ years).
🔨 Advance beyond existing methods, focusing on breakthroughs in energy efficiency, cost, and scalability.
📉 Show potential for reducing costs, with a long-term target of achieving $200/tonne or less.
🇰🇪 Teams will test their technologies in real-world conditions in Kenya, with access to renewable energy and opportunities for geological storage.
☑️ ELIGIBILITY
Tencent is inviting proposals from startups, research institutions, and companies worldwide.
🗓️ Applications Open: Now through May 2025.
1️⃣ Phase One: By September 2025, 10–15 teams per demonstration scenario will be shortlisted.
2️⃣ Phase Two: By February 2026, 1–3 winners per scenario will be selected for funding and resource support.
