🌐 COP30’s outcome is beyond disappointing - but not all is lost…

šŸ‘Ž Let’s start with the bad news: Multilateral climate policy is failing us.

🪵 Yet again, a COP has been unable to deliver what we need most: a clear commitment to phase out of fossil fuels. To add insult to injury, a COP hosted in the Amazon also failed to propose a deforestation roadmap.

āš ļø This is inexcusable. It’s not aligned with science. And the world deserves better.

šŸƒ Yesterday, as I went on my angry post-COP run, I listened to (the very appropriately titled) Outrage + Optimism, The Climate Podcast, and it brought back some much needed optimism to couple my outrage. It reminded me that not all is lost.

šŸ’š I needed that and I am sure some of you do too. So here is the antidote of optimism you might want post-COP:

šŸ’¹ The economy, which is arguable equally important - is going in the right direction: a greener, more affordable, liveable planet.

Just a handful of proof points:

ā˜€ļø Solar is now the cheapest form of electricity in human history

⚔ Renewables account for >90% of new global power installations globally

šŸ”„ Heat pumps are the fastest growing heating technology

šŸš— Electric vehicles represent >20% of new car sales globally, >50% in China, and >99% in Norway

šŸ’° Global clean-energy investment hit ~$2 trillion in 2024, roughly double investment in fossil fuels

šŸ›ļø Don’t get me wrong: I fundamentally believe that climate change can only be solved if politics embraces a simple unstoppable truth: we need to switch from fossils to renewables as soon as possible. And we might feel far away from that world today.

šŸ“£ But every day, the market is pushing us closer towards a cleaner world. Our job is to collectively make politics understand this reality.

šŸ™… Finally, let’s not forget that more than 80 countries - including most of Europe and notably Colombia - pushed hard for the right thing during COP30. These countries will not stop.

šŸŽ™ļø As for carbon dioxide removal: I will be discussing my analysis of COP30 and what came out of it for CDR with Christopher Neidl and Eve Tamme on today’s CDR Policy Scoop at 6pm CET: https://lnkd.in/dabE8UyA - tune in!

✊ Bottom line, folks: if you are angry, you are not alone. But the fight continues, and we have plenty of wind in our sails.
