✅ New from Nature Communications study shows people in the Global South are more supportive of climate tech and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) than Global North.
🌍 Authors Chad M. Baum, Livia Fritz, Sean Low & Benjamin Sovacool conducted an impressive large-scale survey of 30,284 participants across 30 countries, providing the first global study of public support of climate-intervention technologies.
🌱 The study indicated that support for CDR is consistently higher in the Global South across all approaches surveyed, including technology-based solutions and nature-based solutions. However, biochar carbon removal, afforestation, and reforestation, commanded significantly higher support levels.
⚠️ As people in the Global South face a greater burden from climate change impacts, the study demonstrated their concern about the technologies' potential to further inequalities. The higher familiarity and support for CDR technologies may be due to a higher perceived urgency and vulnerability to climate impacts in these regions.
🌐 Given that elections are happening across many parts of the world, it’s crucial that CDR (and climate tech more generally) gains public support if we are going to reach our climate goals. This study highlights the importance of context-specific approaches for communicating and implementing climate intervention technologies.
💬 What do you think? How do we increase public support for CDR in the Global North?
