🤝 EU ETS operators should be able to buy carbon removal directly

📣 Just one of the many bold statements European member of parliament Emma Wiesner made on today’s CDR Policy Scoop.

🇪🇺 As Renew Europe’s Shadow Rapporteur on the EU ETS revision, Wiesner’s voice carries a lot of weight in the upcoming negotiations.

🎙️ Just days before the release of her party’s position, she generously shared her insights with Eve Tamme and I.

What stood out to me regarding the role of removals in the proposal:

🔹 Reduce the role of the EU Commission in procuring CDR and let market dynamics take over instead

🔹 Leverage the CRCF to certify quality and permanence, but leave biochar out for now

🔹 Insist on domestic reductions and removals, and reject outsourcing decarbonisation through international credits

🔹 Don’t rush the start date. Moving it before 2030/31 could have unintended second degree consequences

👇 Now all of these statements are controversial to some of you, I am sure. Share your views in the comments and let’s continue the conversation there.

🏆 What really stood out to me was the passion for and experience in CDR that MEP Wiesner brings to the table. She has been championing the role of removals in EU climate policy for years, and played a huge part in us getting this far in the first place.

🔎 The devil is in the details, and we will have to wait for her official response to be published. If you are interested in the reasoning behind her positions, look now further:

🙏 Thank you again for coming on the pod, Ms Wiesner, and thank you for continuously championing the role of removals for Europe.
