📣 Today, Mati Carbon announced a major milestone: the first successful delivery of enhanced weathering tonnes in the Global South to a group of buyers facilitated via Frontier.
🪨 In partnership with smallholder farmers in Chhattisgarh, India, basalt rock dust was deployed as an enhanced rock weathering (#ERW) feedstock in rice paddy fields, aiding in permanent carbon sequestration as well as improving soil health and crop productivity.
💚 This marks an important milestone for the CDR community and Mati has demonstrated that it is possible to deliver durable carbon removal to buyers while simultaneously providing co-benefits to climate-vulnerable, smallholder farmers and has implications across the Global South.
🇮🇳 India has the largest population globally with over 1.4 billion is the fifth largest economy. It’s also currently ranked third globally in terms of carbon emissions. Needless to say that what happens in hashtag#India over the coming decade, has direct implications for the rest of the world.
👀 According to Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA), India has the potential to remove 0.9Gt per year of durable removal of CO2 and $90 billion per year potential annual revenue from the sale of carbon credits from CDR. Check them out if you want to learn more about CDR in India.
💪 India has what it takes to become a global leader in sustainable carbon management with a convergence of optimal natural assets, technological innovation, and policy momentum.
👏 Huge congratulations to Shantanu Agarwal and the rest of the Mati Carbon team. We can’t wait to see what you do next!
