🇨🇦 On Monday, the Liberal Party won the elections in Canada - against all odds. So what? To my knowledge, this is the first major party anywhere in the world that has made carbon dioxide removal an explicit government priority.
🌟 In its manifesto, they call for Canada to become one of the world leaders for CDR, building on a lot of the incredible work already achieved over the last years: from public procurement, to investment tax credits, to methodology development.
👏 Even better: the leader of the Liberal party and Prime Minister is Mark Carney, a climate finance veteran. Among others, he is the former UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and the co-founder of the Taskforce on Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets (TSVCM) - predecessor of the ICVCM. Basically he gets net-zero, climate finance, and carbon markets like no other head of state anywhere in the world.
🤔 But what does this really mean? What can we realistically expect, especially given much more pressing issues Canada is facing due to the unprecedented events unfolding in the U.S.?
👉 No better person to discuss this with than Na'im Merchant, Executive Director of Carbon Removal Canada, and arguably one of the leading voices on CDR in Canada and beyond.
📅 Na’im will be joining Eve Tamme and I for our next CDR Policy Scoop on Monday, 12th of May. Tune in here on LinkedIn for our live session at 9am PT, noon EST, and 6pm CEST: https://lnkd.in/dEXBcYzS
⁉️ As always, let us know what you think in advance. Do you share my enthusiasm? Does Canada have what it takes to become a, or even the, global leader for CDR? Comment below and let us know.
