‼️ If you read one thing today, it’s this.

⏰ Johan Rockström is one of the leading climate scientists globally. He just published an alarming wake up call ahead of COP (link in comments).

📣 His message is clear: if all current NDCs are kept, we are looking at 2.5 degrees of warming. Even in best case scenarios, we are looking at overshoot to 1.6-1.7 degrees. Our goal - at this point - has to be minimising overshoot and then moving as quickly as possible back to 1.5 degrees or lower.

❌ “Failure is not inevitable. It is a choice”

More precisely, he stresses that five things need to happen:

1️⃣ Phase out fossil-fuels

2️⃣ Massively start scaling carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies

3️⃣ Transform the global food system from being the single largest emitter of GHGs (≈ 30%), to become a net-sink of carbon

4️⃣ Invest in nature to bolster our resilience to warming

5️⃣ Bring non-CO2 gases back to lowest possible levels by 2050

🤯 On CDR specifically, Rockström stresses that we need 600 gigatons (!!!) between now and 2100

💬 Rockström has not historically been an outspoken champion of CDR. In his words: “whether we like it or not, we have no choice [but to scale CDR]”.

🌍 I hope the world listens, especially the CDR skeptics - often within the climate space itself. STOP opposing the scale up of CDR! Those days are over. If you are positioning yourself against CDR, you are actively hindering our chances of keeping this planet liveable. You are on the wrong side of history.

🙌 We need all hands on deck, right now, to scale this industry to hundreds of gigatons.

🤓 Really recommend reading his full (short) piece - linked in comments.

🤔 What is your take? Is this finally the turning point for all that counter-productive anti-CDR sentiment?
