🎉 Happy New Year everyone - 2026 will be a big one for CDR
I expect this year to mark a step-change for CDR in at least three ways: 1️⃣ Formal recognition in compliance markets 2️⃣ Explicit government endorsement (certification + direct procurement) 3️⃣ Entry into the climate mainstream 👀 In case you missed it, make sure to tune into the 2025 review and 2026 forecast Eve Tamme and I released over the break (link in comments) where we dive into the above and much more in the usual, punchy format. 😶🌫️ Today, I want to share somet

🤑 What do CDR buyers really think?
🔒 At pretty much every CDR event, we all agree on one thing: we need more buyers. But the harder (and more interesting) question is what will actually unlock that demand? 💬 That’s exactly what we set out to explore in a special episode of the CDR Policy Scoop, recorded live at Carbon Unbound Europe in London back in October. 💱 Together with my co-host Eve Tamme , we had the chance to sit down - in person - with buyers to find out how they see the current CDR policy and ma

🏛️ What a year! Time to reflect on what 2025 really delivered for carbon removal policy.
🗓️ To wrap up the year, Eve Tamme and I recorded a CDR Policy Scoop episode reflecting on the biggest CDR policy developments of 2025 - from very different angles. 📉 From my side, the biggest low point was the US retreat from climate leadership: withdrawal from Paris, attacks on climate science, and frozen DAC funding all had real impacts on carbon removal. 🇪🇺 At the same time, leadership didn’t disappear, it just shifted. Europe stepped into the spotlight with: 1️⃣ Carb

🤔 What if phasing out oil & gas takes far longer than we hope? What happens in the meantime?
💭 Like most people, I prefer to imagine a future without fossil fuels. Yet the reality is sobering: oil & gas (O&G) is set to remain a part of the global energy system for years to come, likely even decades. ⛽ That raises an uncomfortable but unavoidable question: if we can’t get rid of O&G fast enough, should we at least decarbonise it as aggressively as possible? Or does that risk locking it in forever? 🔥 That’s exactly the conversation I’ll be having -live here on Linked

🇪🇺 Europe will procure huge amounts of international credits - but what credits exactly?
🎯 A final agreement has been reached: 5% international credits (1990 levels) plus a potential additional 5% (2005 levels) at member state level. 📈 Starting as early as 2031, we are talking 100s of megatons, potentially more than a gigaton worth of credits (we are still thin on details). 📋 But what credits exactly? So far, all we have is reference to “high-quality” and a reference to the Paris Agreement. It will be up to the EU Commission to prepare an impact assessment and

🤔 What happens if we DON’T scale CDR fast enough? Do we need more drastic solutions?
💭 I’m a pathological optimist. But in the current geopolitical climate, these questions have been plaguing me more and more. And I am not the only one… 🇮🇸 Even Iceland’s Climate Minister, Johann Pall Johannsson, told Reuters that, “We cannot afford to wait for definitive, long-term research before acting", in the context of the existential threat that the AMOC collapse would pose to his country (and the rest of the world, frankly). ❄️ That’s why I’m going to chat - live he

🎙️ The gender gap in podcasting is far worse than we think 🎙️
😮 Women make up about half of all podcast listeners, yet less than 25% of all hosts and 30% of all guests are women… And the deeper you dig, the worse this gap becomes: 💸 Women podcasters earn on average 15–25% less ad revenue 📉 Less than 18% of venture-backed podcasts are female-founded. 🎧 At the CDR Policy Scoop, we fell into a typical dynamic: we had done 10 episodes or so and realised we barely had women on the show. 🔎 Ever since, we have made a deliberate effort:

‼️ If you read one thing today, it’s this.
⏰ Johan Rockström is one of the leading climate scientists globally. He just published an alarming wake up call ahead of COP (link in comments). 📣 His message is clear: if all current NDCs are kept, we are looking at 2.5 degrees of warming. Even in best case scenarios, we are looking at overshoot to 1.6-1.7 degrees. Our goal - at this point - has to be minimising overshoot and then moving as quickly as possible back to 1.5 degrees or lower. ❌ “Failure is not inevitable. It i

👀 The Net Zero Standards face off: ISO vs SBTi
😬 For years, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has been the gold standard for corporate climate targets. But SBTi has struggled: governance issues, inconsistent guidance, and growing pushback from companies frustrated by its rigidity and lack of clarity. ⭐ Into that gap now steps the ISO Net Zero standard, developed with input from over 170 countries and promising global legitimacy and harmonisation. It will officially launch with a big splash at COP30. 🏢 And, let

❓"What's your target: is it to stop global warming or get rid of fossil fuels?"❓
💡 I had never thought about this as an either / or question and always assumed we can only stop global warming IF we get rid of fossil fuels. ✈️ In the latest CDR Policy Scoop, Robert Höglund and I got to go deep on the role of carbon removal in aviation and shipping. 🤔 One of the key arguments Robert makes is that our best shot at net-zero could be to focus on whatever solution has the lowest cost, e.g. CDR + regular jet fuel vs eSAF. Loved recording this one - go check it

🌐 Is this the COP where CDR goes mainstream?
⏳ The countdown is on: 14 days to COP30 in Belem, Brazil. This COP is shaping up to be a game changer for carbon removal. Under the umbrella of CDR30: The Global CDR Initiative at COP30, carbon removal will have its own Pavillion in the blue zone for the first time! 🤝 Now that Article 6 is operational since last year’s COP29 in Baku, our focus is shifting from negotiations to deals and announcements. Will we see any major commitments by governments around the world? 🎙️ To g

🇬🇧 Is the UK turning into a carbon removal powerhouse?🇬🇧
🤯 Still reeling from my short and intense trip to London, where I attended Carbon Unbound Europe and got to catch up with all my favourite UK CDR policy experts. 💚 The timing couldn’t be better: Dr Alan Whitehead released his long-awaited independent GGR (=CDR) Review today! Almost 200 pages based on hundreds of stakeholder interviews, workshops, and written consultations. So where is the UK at? Reasons to be bullish: 💪 The government has real muscle: The UK already has th

🚢 Is climate multi-laterlism a sinking ship?
😩 Like many of you, I’ve been really taken aback by the IMO’s decision last Friday to suspend the adoption of its planned maritime carbon price by a year. 🌐 Details are starting to emerge on what happened, as shocked negotiators are taking stock of what this means for the IMO, and climate multilateralism in general. 🇺🇲 The tactics employed - especially by the U.S. - were completely unprecedented and caught supporters of this particular regulation off-guard. 🤷 So where do

⏪ Throwback Thursday: DAC vs Biochar
🥊 Remember that time when I went head-to-head with Martin Freimüller - aka DACman - in the CDR Policy Scoop’s inaugural SHOWDOWN debate: Biochar vs DAC? ⭐ It was such a personal highlight for me to engage with something I feel particularly passionate about - in a new, exciting format. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dG8Wkph9 😍 Sure, this debate ruffled some feathers at first. But, it clearly resonated with a lot of people too. We had over 1,000 registrations to the Linkedin l

🤔 Did I get it all wrong?
🔄 No surprises here: I’ve been a passionate advocate for the inclusion of carbon removals into the EU’s Emission Trading System (and other ETSs around the world). 🤝 There is another way, though. One which I have personally barely covered and which could prove to be much more effective in scaling this much-needed CDR industry: a removal compliance system. 📑 Carbon Gap is unveiling its new report next week, examining a different path to drive long-term demand for permanent c
