šŸŽ™ļø The gender gap in podcasting is far worse than we think šŸŽ™ļø

😮 Women make up about half of all podcast listeners, yet less than 25% of all hosts and 30% of all guests are women…

And the deeper you dig, the worse this gap becomes:

šŸ’ø Women podcasters earn on average 15–25% less ad revenue

šŸ“‰ Less than 18% of venture-backed podcasts are female-founded.

šŸŽ§ At the CDR Policy Scoop, we fell into a typical dynamic: we had done 10 episodes or so and realised we barely had women on the show.

šŸ”Ž Ever since, we have made a deliberate effort: we measure gender parity (even speaking time), created our own database of potential female speakers, and backwards design episodes to ensure gender parity

The results are speaking for themselves:

āœ… 53% of all our 30 guests so far were women

šŸ“ˆ 47% of guests across our 50 episodes are women (some guests come more than once)

šŸ¤ And - of course - I have the wonderful Eve Tamme as my co-host.

šŸŒ Moving forward, we want to double down on diversity. Not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it generates the best content. So - while maintaining an even gender split - you can expect more geographic diversity, for example.

šŸ“£ More than anything, this is a call to action: if you run a podcast, no matter the topic, do a quick analysis of how much women feature and - if underrepresented - correct it.

šŸ‘€ It has never been easier to find exceptional guests for your show. If you use LinkedIn, you will inevitably see many brilliant women pop up on your feed every day. And if you need a more structured, curated database, head over to Women and Climate or contact Women In Carbon.

šŸš€ This might take some effort, but your podcast will be better off for it, trust me.
