👣 My family’s carbon footprint in 2025 was 17.4t - what was yours? 👣

📊 Just like for a business or government, we all have to take responsibility and minimise our impact on the planet. The first step is awareness and data. Only then can we act on it.
I have to admit, 2025 is the first year I ran the numbers for my whole family - and they are higher than I’d like, particularly in a year where we:
➡️ Moved into a flat with a heat pump and renewable energy
➡️ Reduced air travel considerably
➡️ Switched all investments to be ESG aligned
➡️ Maintained meat-free diet
➡️ Switched dog to insect protein food
🚗 Car travel alone accounts for 28% of our footprint, mainly because our hybrid still runs far too often on petrol (including six months with a broken battery), followed by food (19%), and energy (17%).
☀️ The one big thing I have planned for 2026 is to install rooftop solar + heat pumps in our primary home. The next big move would be a move to a fully electric car, but I fear that will have to wait until 2027.
💚 A huge shout-out to Exomad Green, who have kindly agreed to compensate my family’s 2025 emissions with durable carbon removal from their biochar projects in Bolivia. I’ve seen the impact of their work first hand when I shot “The Power of Biochar” there last January - check it out in the comments.
✈️ Note: this does not include business travel. I haven't crunched the numbers yet, but I should land at around 5t in 2025, considerably less than previous years as I cut down significantly on air travel. All my business travel since 2022 is being compensated with durable CDR by Carbonfuture.
Want to do the same?
1️⃣ Using AI, you are able to get a pretty good estimate of your footprint in less than 15 minutes. What might take a bit longer is digging up some energy bills and figuring out your travels for the year, but it has never been easier to do this.
2️⃣ Next, to compensate, you can simply head to https://www.cdr-shops.com/ and find an option that suits you. If compensating the full year feels daunting, just buy your first ton. Anything is better than nothing.
🌎 I know this is a highly personal topic. Everyone has to decide for themselves where to make changes to their lifestyle and whether / how much to compensate. Hopefully this post can serve as a starting point.
❓ So what was your carbon footprint in 2025?
