๐Ÿ“Š [Poll] Is biochar carbon removal (hashtag#BCR) an open or closed systems carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#CDR) method? ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ”ฆ

๐Ÿ”ฆ Like many of you, I followed the discussions around BCR on Monday during the carbon removal and carbon farming (hashtag#CRCF) expert group with great interest. The majority of it was spent on monitoring and liability, or better how to track the sequestered carbon over time.

๐Ÿค” What struck me more than anything, was the underlying assumption of BCR as an open-system carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#CDR) approach (like enhanced weathering), whereas my understanding is that it is a closed system approach (like direct air capture).

๐Ÿ’š Why does this matter? Because it completely changes how we think about regulating BCR.

๐Ÿ‘‰ To me, folks are confusing the process of removing carbon from biomass through pyrolysis (= closed, fully measurable system) from the application of the biochar itself (= which can be in open systems such as soils or forests).

โ‰ What is your take? Closed or open system? Why?
