šŸ“£ The 2022/23 European Biochar Market Report is out šŸ“£

Writer: sebmanhartsebmanhart

Biochar Carbon Removal (#BCR) is the most dominant form of durable, industrial carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) available today. Here are the highlights of where the sector is at and where it is going:

šŸ There are now 130 BCR production plants in Europe, with 28 added in 2022 alone and another 51 to go live in 2023.

šŸ“ˆ Biochar production grew by 52% to 33,500t or 90,000t CO2 removed in 2022, expected to grow by 80% in 2023 to over 50,000t or 150,000t CO2 removed. This marks an impressive 3 year CAGR of 68%.

šŸŒ The vast majority of BCR is occurring in just a handful of countries: 32% in šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ, 18% in šŸ‡¦šŸ‡¹ andšŸ‡ØšŸ‡, 25% in the Nordics (šŸ‡©šŸ‡°šŸ‡øšŸ‡ŖšŸ‡«šŸ‡®šŸ‡³šŸ‡“), and 25% in the rest of šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ŗ.

šŸ”Ž Certification of biochar is becoming increasingly relevant. While in 2018 only 50% of production was certified, we are now already at 70%. Leading standards are the #EBC, Puro.earth, Verra, and ISO14064.

šŸ’” Equipment manufacturers such as Stiesdal, SYNCRAFT, Pyreg GmbH, or AQUAGREEN are bringing incredible innovations to market. With years of experience, the technology readiness level (#TRL) for BCR has reached 9 for some and 8 for most manufacturers.

So what does the future of BCR look like?

#2030target: the report estimates that a 70% annual growth rate until 2030 is realistic, which would lead to 6Mt of CO2 removed, or 120% of the European CommissionĀ“s current objective for industrial carbon removal by 2030. This would require just 1% of sustainable biomass available.

#2040target: it further estimates that BCR could lead to 100Mt of CO2 removed in Europe alone. This would require 19% of sustainable biomass available.

These are impressive numbers, testament to the growth of the BCR sector in Europe. Huge shout out to the European Biochar Industry Consortium and in particular Hansjƶrg LerchenmĆ¼ller for the work behind this invaluable, public report - https://lnkd.in/ez--cHhf
