📊 Nat Bullard just released his annual decarbonisation deck. 200 carefully curated graphs that provide you with a full overview of how decarbonisation is progressing. It is the single most insightful deck I see each year.
🌟 I highly recommend checking out the full deck. What stood out to me:
🇨🇳 It is all about China: 40% more electricity than EU and US combined (16). Emissions flat to falling (22). Half of all energy investment globally is China (67). Added more battery storage capacity in December than US all year (106). China makes 42% of all cars globally, up from 3.5% in 2000 (118).
🪦 Fossil fuel’s days are counted: banks made more money from green than fossil underwriting for the fourth consecutive year (48). Renewables generate more energy than coal for the first time (75). Even India coal has peaked (81). Oil market increasingly oversupplied, soon by 5m barrels a day (167). Solar actuals on wildly different path than projections (183).
🚗 Electric vehicles are taking over: more than a quarter of global car sales (112). BYD has overtaken Tesla in EV sales (129), and Tesla is heading downwards (127) while BYD clearly upwards (128). An EV is now cheaper than an top-end MacBook (194).
😍 Overall the picture it paints - at least for me - was one of optimism. Forget the headlines, renewables and electrification are winning. The market has already decided that the future will be a green one.
🤷♂️ Regarding CDR, I was actually surprised how little coverage it got. Only 1-2 slides (65-66) which didn’t really say that much. Considering CDR’s pretty significant role in achieving net-zero (>10%), I hope this will change for future iterations.
👏 Huge thanks to Nat Bullard again for putting this together - it is an invaluable resource and a MUST for anyone working in climate.
