🪨 Biochar carbon removal (hashtag#BCR) has immense potential in the United States. The Western U.S. alone generates over 100Mt of waste biomass every year. 100,000,000 tons. Much of this ends up fuelling catastrophic fires like the one we are currently witnessing.
😮 When I started doing advocacy work in Washington D.C. and beyond, I was shocked to see how little awareness of and appreciation for BCR existed among policy makers, despite incredible, industry-leading BCR companies operating in the U.S.
🌎 So in May 2023 I teamed up with Amy McCrae Kessler and Lauren Breynaert and founded the US Biochar Coalition (USBC) to put Biochar 2.0 - industrial, large-scale, modern, permanent BCR - on the map in DC and beyond.
It has been a wild ride. Some of the many successes:
📈 Scaling the USBC to 26 members, covering the vast majority of the American BCR ecosystem.
🤝 Teaming up with SMART Policy Group to enable dozens of policy makers to learn first hand about BCR
🏛️ Significant BCR policy wins such as the NRCS Code 336 or the (hopefully soon) incoming Biochar Research Network Act.
⌛ Now it is time to hand over the reins and my Board Director role to my Carbonfuture colleague Michael Railey. I will stay on in an advisory capacity with a focus on BCR policy.
👀 And, dear biochar world, don’t you think you are getting rid of me. More to follow soon - watch this space ;-)
🙏 At this point a huge thank you to Amy McCrae Kessler and Lauren Breynaert without whom the USBC wouldn’t exist, Karl Strahl, Robert Kovach, Mayo P. Ryan, AFM, and Tom Marrero for doing all the hard work in the trenches with us, and the SPG around Maureen Walsh for channelling our voice to the right people in DC.
⭐ And, of course, all the other wonderful companies and people I got to work with over this period: Pyreg GmbH, Myno Carbon, Sitos Group, Oregon Biochar Solutions, Verde Resources Inc., Cula Technologies, Grain Ecosystem, Phoenix Energy, Wakefield BioChar, Corigin Solutions, Inc., CountryMark, Jack Wong, Greg Stangl, Michael Woelk, Jason E. Dodier, Will Hessert, Oliver Erb, and many others.
📣 Keep up the great work and let’s make BCR ubiquitous across the U.S.
