♀️ Today is International Women’s Day and I wanted to take this opportunity to remind us why it's more relevant than ever.
👫 A recent global study by Kings College London revealed that Gen Z men and women are the most divided on gender equality compared to any other generation surveyed, such as thinking we’ve gone so far in promoting women’s equality that we are discriminating against men.
⚠️ The harsh reality is that while IWD is celebrated around the world, not one country in the world is on track to achieving its gender equality targets set out in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Not one.
💪 Within climate women matter. Women are disproportionately affected by climate change, but research has shown that women are also the key agents in finding solutions and fighting climate change.
🏛️ Studies have found that countries with higher proportions of women in parliament are more likely to ratify international environmental treaties and have stricter climate policies. And where women have higher social and political status, their countries have 12% lower CO2 emissions.
👩🏽💼 In business, gender-diverse firms tend to have better environmental reporting and climate governance than their peers, and make more investments in renewable power generation and energy efficiency improvement.
🌍 And yet, at last year’s COP29 in Baku, just 8 female speakers out of 77 took the global stage at the opening of COP29. The share of female party delegates was around 34 percent and just one in five heads of delegations were women.
💚 All of us need to ensure women are taking the charge against climate change from the board room to parliaments across the globe. The world will be a lot better for it. Who are your favourite women champions in climate?
