🇺🇲 US DoE announces $52,000,000 for direct air capture (hashtag#DAC) pilots 🇺🇲

🥂 Happy Monday! In case you were Out-Of-Office on Friday (like I was) and missed it: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (hashtag#FECM) released its latest round of carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#CDR) funding. $52.5M to be exact.

🌬️ As its name suggests, the Commercial Direct Air Capture Pilot Prize supports the development of direct air capture (hashtag#DAC) pilot facilities. Yes, unfortunately only DAC…

💰 The DAC Pilot Prize is broken into four stages: Concept, Engineer, Permit, and Operate. Winning teams will be eligible to win up to a total of $12 million each over the phases and is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

👀 The Fine Print: The DAC pilot facilities must be capable of capturing at least 500 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year and ultimately operating a pilot direct air capture system for at least 2,000 hours.

📅 The application deadline: February 7, 2025.

🔎 Really good to see the DoE continuing to put money on the table to scale CDR. These programmes are essential and will have an impact way beyond the U.S. The only caveat: DAC only, again. I know their hands a tied and the DoE is doing best they can with the mandate they have. I really hope that future funding will be more tech agnostic though.
