⚠️ What is happening at the US DoE? ⚠️

😡 Over the last few days, the US Department of Energy (DoE) has fallen victim to Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government of Efficiency (DOGE) and thousands of staff lost their jobs (as many as 12.5% of the DoE).

🪓 DOGE, empowered by President Trump’s recent executive order, has initiated large and wide-scale reductions in the federal workforce of 2.3 million people across the United States. DoE officials were made to justify the jobs of individual probationary employees (<1 year service) in written statements of as little as 200 characters.

😵‍💫 It’s currently unclear how this impacts the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management specifically, under which Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) lies.

🎁 As a last-minute parting gift from the Biden Administration, the DoE released its draft report in January: Carbon Dioxide Removal – Purpose, Approaches, and Recommendations.

🤓 The report - a fantastic read for any CDR professional - is very comprehensive and lays out potential pathways for investment, regulation, and market development, but it leaves open critical questions about implementation.

👀 We should be watching carefully how the Trump administration deals with, or changes, this report. That will give us a good indication of how CDR in the DoE might evolve over the coming four years.

💚 In the meantime, my thoughts go out to all those incredible civil servants at the DoE who have been laid off. My message to you: your skills and experience are invaluable to the green transition.

🔎 Once the storm has settled, consider joining the CDR industry. We have built CDRjobs exactly for this purpose.

💬 If you know something I don’t, please do share, and help us make sense of what is going on.
