👀 What you need to know about the upcoming CRCF workshop 👀

🇪🇺 The next Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (hashtag#CRCF) Expert Group meeting (the 6th - but who’s counting?) takes place tomorrow, Wednesday 25th of March. This time it will be fully remote.

🔦 Why should you care? The CRCF is arguably one of the most important carbon dioxide removal (hashtag#CDR) policies in development globally. We are on the final stretch, and things are getting concrete.

🔎 For permanent CDR, the EU Commission already delivered (basically final?) draft methodologies for hashtag#BECCS, hashtag#DACCS, and hashtag#BCR. These will be presented and discussed.

👏 They have really done a terrific job on these methodologies. They are detailed, science-based, and have the potential to move the sector to the next level. Chapeau!

🖤 I will have the honour of representing Biochar Europe tomorrow. Here are some of the key comments we still have on the biochar carbon removal methodology:

1️⃣ BCR > Biochar: biochar is one of the products of pyrolysis, biochar carbon removal the process and climate services we are talking about. Same way we say DACCS and not CO2. Let’s just be consistent.

2️⃣ Sink > production: right now, there is a heavy focus on the production of the biochar itself. For CDR, however, the primary focus has to be on the *unique* sink, including clear liability along the chain of custody. The biochar itself can come from several producers, but there can be only one sink.

3️⃣ Facility emissions: the carbon removal is just one of several products of pyrolysis, alongside syngases and renewable energy. As such, only a fraction of the facility’s emission should count towards the BCR capital emissions.

4️⃣ Regulatory harmonisation: many regulations already exist defining clear thresholds/limits/boundaries, e.g. the Fertilising Product Regulation (FRP). No need to reinvent the wheel in this draft. Instead, it should reference EU regulation even more.

Beyond BCR, I look forward to hearing from the Commission:

❓ How / when exactly they plan to get the first set of methodologies across the finish line and

❓ More details on the development of the next set. I hear OAE, ERA, DOC, and Mineralisation are all planned for kick-off in 2025!
