What is the Global Environment Facility?
๐ฆ The GEF is a multilateral fund which provides finance for projects in developing countries related to #biodiversity, climate change, and environmental management.
๐ฐ The GEF distributes more than $1 billion per year, making it the largest source of multilateral funding for biodiversity globally. What will happen at the GEF Assembly?
๐จ๐ฆ From August 22nd-26th, environmental leaders from 185 countries will meet in Vancouver, Canada.
๐ฑ The Assembly will be a critical stocktake exercise for 2030 goals to reduce pollution, combat climate change, and fight nature loss.
๐คThe Assembly aims to build on recent diplomatic breakthroughs at #COP15 and is set to include the launch of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund: a new source of finance to protect species and ecosystems.
Just some of the extensive list of speakers include Carlos Manuel Rodriguez , Steven Guilbeault , Sonia Guajajara, Apoorva Arya, and Aloke Barnwal.
Currently, carbon #offsets are often the only way to fund certain projects to maintain and grow our global forests. While many of these projects are coming under scrutiny as they might not hold up on their carbon claims - they are still crucial for biodiversity and need funding. Figuring out how we can get more funding for biodiversity might take some pressure off using #carboncredits for those projects.
What are you hoping to see from the GEF Assembly? How can we mobilise more funding to protect biodiversity?
