🏛️ Guess how many policy levers there are to scale removals?

165, and counting…
🤩 Carbon Gap recently launched its impressive and incredibly useful Policy Levers Library. 165 levers across 6 categories and each scored on 11 criteria.
🎙️ Eve Tamme and I sat down with its architect Alexander Mäkelä in our latest Carbon Removal Scoop who talked us through it. Here are a few highlights that stuck with me from this conversation.
🔹 We keep focusing on the same policies: ETSs, CCfDs, procurement. But there is so much more out there which could be a much better fit for a given situation.that
🔹 We need to look beyond Brussels. Take cities as an example: there are almost 11,000 municipalities in Germany alone, many with a net zero target.
🔹 We need to look outside of removals for inspiration. Clean tech as the most obvious example, but even beyond. There are great examples of successful policy that we can learn from.
🏦 I had to ask Alex what his favourite lever is. Like a good dad, he refused to pick a favourite. When narrowed to what Europe needs most, I did get a concrete answer: financing and bankability:
“How do we get debt financing in CDR to be as boring as it is for renewables? That’s the end game.”
👀 Personally, I couldn’t agree more. In fact, watch out because we already recorded an episode on exactly this topic, which will come out soon.
⚖️ So what is my favorite? Trading and Settlement Infrastructure for Removals. I think there is nothing more catalytic than creating a liquid CDR market based on genuine legal assets, not CORCs.
Whether you are a policymaker, advocate, supplier, or buyer - this library has something for everyone. Check out the full conversation with Alex:
