🪨 The Minister of Environment going all in on biochar.

🇹🇼 Imagine if the European Union announced a 20Mt/year target by 2030 for biochar carbon removal alone? That is exactly what Minister ChiMing Peng of Taiwan just did.
🎯 His bold vision: Taiwan is to produce 1Mt of removals through biochar per year by 2030.
đź’Ş Remember, Taiwan is a country of 23 million people with very limited biochar production at present, which makes this even more remarkable.
Eve Tamme and I had the great pleasure to host Minister Peng on the CDR Policy Scoop , where he laid out his vision and motivation in detail.
Some highlights:
🔹 Taiwan is at the centre of the AI boom. A single company like TSMC might need to compensate up to 10Mt/year. CDR has a key role here
🔹 Carbon pricing has already kicked in. An emission trading system is to follow soon, which will then be the primary driver for BCR demand.
🔹 An estimated 500 pyrolysis facilities will need to be set up processing 1.3Mt of feedstock per year, largely from domestic agriculture.
🔹 Taiwan plans to build on the European CRCF methodology for biochar.
And much, much more…
🪙 This episode was a real treasure trove. Minister Peng’s passion and ambition are infectious. He is throwing all his entrepreneurial skills at this problem, creating linkages between ministries, and learning from best practices globally to make Taiwan a global leader for biochar carbon removal.

đź’Ż Finally, one big reason to celebrate: this was our 100th Scoop episode. Glad we could make it such a special one.
🙏 Thank you once again Minister Peng for coming on the show and for your continued leadership. Cannot wait to see what CDR in Taiwan will look like in a few years time.
