👀 Let’s unpack Bill Gates’ controversial new take on climate change 👀
✉️ Gates' letter "Three Hard Truths About Climate Change" is certainly making the rounds in my circles. I have some important observations: 👎 Climate and aid budgets are NOT zero sum. Between 2015 and 2024, aid grew 60% ($132B → $212B). In the same period, total global investment in climate solutions more than doubled, from roughly $600B to over $1,300B a year. Pitting the two against each other is not just unhelpful, it is unfounded. 🌎 Tipping points matter. Gates assumes

❓"What's your target: is it to stop global warming or get rid of fossil fuels?"❓
💡 I had never thought about this as an either / or question and always assumed we can only stop global warming IF we get rid of fossil fuels. ✈️ In the latest CDR Policy Scoop, Robert Höglund and I got to go deep on the role of carbon removal in aviation and shipping. 🤔 One of the key arguments Robert makes is that our best shot at net-zero could be to focus on whatever solution has the lowest cost, e.g. CDR + regular jet fuel vs eSAF. Loved recording this one - go check it

😮 See it to believe it! 😮
🌍 Carbon dioxide removal is not a future phantasy. It is here today. There are hundreds of companies all around the world removing CO2 from the atmosphere day in, day out. 🇩🇪 This Thursday and Friday, I will be joining 60+ German politicians, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, and scientists as part of Deutscher Verband für negative Emissionen e.V. (DVNE)'s CDR Experience Tour 2025. 💚 Travelling together by bus through the West of Germany, we will be visiting CDR projects

🌐 Is this the COP where CDR goes mainstream?
⏳ The countdown is on: 14 days to COP30 in Belem, Brazil. This COP is shaping up to be a game changer for carbon removal. Under the umbrella of CDR30: The Global CDR Initiative at COP30, carbon removal will have its own Pavillion in the blue zone for the first time! 🤝 Now that Article 6 is operational since last year’s COP29 in Baku, our focus is shifting from negotiations to deals and announcements. Will we see any major commitments by governments around the world? 🎙️ To g

🤨 Did you realise carbon markets are full of paradoxes?
😵💫 There are 29 paradoxes to be precise, and they lie at the heart of why carbon markets are struggling to scale, leading to circular conversations with no end. My favourites: 🌲BASELINE PARADOX: you get money for growing but not for protecting trees (unless someone explicitly says they will cut them down…) 🤑 ADDITIONALITY PARADOX: the more financially successful your project, the less likely it will qualify for credit revenue. 🤩 NOVELTY PARADOX: we tend to prioritise an

🇬🇧 Is the UK turning into a carbon removal powerhouse?🇬🇧
🤯 Still reeling from my short and intense trip to London, where I attended Carbon Unbound Europe and got to catch up with all my favourite UK CDR policy experts. 💚 The timing couldn’t be better: Dr Alan Whitehead released his long-awaited independent GGR (=CDR) Review today! Almost 200 pages based on hundreds of stakeholder interviews, workshops, and written consultations. So where is the UK at? Reasons to be bullish: 💪 The government has real muscle: The UK already has th

🚢 Is climate multi-laterlism a sinking ship?
😩 Like many of you, I’ve been really taken aback by the IMO’s decision last Friday to suspend the adoption of its planned maritime carbon price by a year. 🌐 Details are starting to emerge on what happened, as shocked negotiators are taking stock of what this means for the IMO, and climate multilateralism in general. 🇺🇲 The tactics employed - especially by the U.S. - were completely unprecedented and caught supporters of this particular regulation off-guard. 🤷 So where do

🇬🇧 London, here I come! 🇬🇧
😀 First time travelling now as a dad in order to attend @ Carbon Unbound Europe in London Tuesday and Wednesday, October 21-22nd. But it will be worth it as there’s lots of exciting things in store. 🥊 First off I’m so excited to moderate CDR Policy Scoop’s first-ever hybrid format on stage and streamed live SHOWDOWN debate: Voluntary vs Compliance Markets – What will get us to scale first with TITO JANKOWSKI - AIRMINER and Eve Tamme taking respective corners. 🎥 Have FOMO?

🔥 BREAKING: IMO suspends global carbon tax on shipping 🥲
🤔 Remember back in April, when the world celebrated a first-of-a-kind maritime carbon tax to help it achieve maritime's 2050 net-zero target? 👎 Well, that has just been suspended for one year with a real risk of being axed for good. 🇺🇸 Why? Exorbitant U.S. pressure, particularly on smaller countries, in the lead-up to the meeting. 💚 Back in April, 63 countries had voted in favour and only 13 against, despite the U.S. walking out on the meeting and threatening retaliatory

🤔 What is really happening to Direct Air Capture?
📊 Lots has been written about this topic lately. Personally, I like to look at the data–not the gossip. That’s why I was so excited when I saw @cdr.fyi’s incredibly timely “Direct Air Capture Market Snapshot H1 2025” come out yesterday. 😬 On the surface, it doesn’t look good: of 167 DAC companies (as per @grant faber’s latest list - see comments), only 31 have made a sale, and only 2 (!) have delivered any CDR. 🤏 Almost 2.5Mt of DAC credits have been sold to date - of whic

🇨🇦 Canadians want carbon removal and they’re ready for leadership.
📊 A new national poll of 2,300 Canadians by Carbon Removal Canada and the Carbon Business Council shows two-thirds (64%) of Canadians support carbon removal — and four in five (81%) believe it’s essential for Canada’s future. Also remarkable: ✅ 67% believe it will create jobs and grow the economy ✅ 62% say they’re more likely to vote for candidates backing it ✅ 56% view companies more favorably when they invest in removals 🤝 This support cuts across political lines: from
