๐ซ Boeing is ready for takeoff
๐ Love it or hate it, but humanity is flying more and more. The sector is growing at 3-4% a year and itโs been estimated that 2 billion annual journeys today will become 10 billion by 2050, with emissions more than doubling to over 2Gt. ๐ฏ Thankfully, aviation has a collective, global net-zero target for 2050. According to IATA, the plan is to achieve this by primarily focusing on sustainable aviation fuel to do around 65% of the job. Technology innovation will reduce a fur

๐บ๐ฒ Finally, U.S. CDR Policy is starting to make sense
๐
For the past year, policy news coming out of the U.S. have been confusing at best. Whenever I tried to figure out what was going on, I ended up with more questions than answers. No more. ๐คฉ Over the last week, two podcasts were released with the same objective: clearing the air. First, the Carbon Curve featured Giana Amador , Erin Burns , and Peter Minor for a round-table. Then - great minds think alike - we at the CDR Policy Scoop released an episode with Professor

๐ฎ 60,000 people have now watched "The Power of Biochar" ๐ฎ
๐ฌ Picture this: Diego Justiniano and I are shooting a scene in the Amazon: it is loud, it is noisy, it is hot, it is humid, and thousands of insects/mosquitos are hovering around us. ๐ชจ Yet there is no better place to tell the story of this black gold called biochar. ๐ In my wildest dreams I would never have imagined that this short-film would be seen by so many people. What makes me particularly happy? Over 45,000 of these views came through Youtube recommendations, so

๐คฏ Net-zero or dying pensioners - seriously, how did we get to this point? ๐คฏ
๐๏ธ And this clip is not some fringe outlet: The Diary Of A CEO is one of the worldโs leading podcasts, with over a billion downloads/views to date. ๐ I was fairly shocked by this episode with Konstantin Kisin . His discussion with host Steven Bartlett on global warming is yet another example of how we have moved from outright denying climate change to reframing it in misguided, binary outcomes: โ Net-zero means destroying our economy. โ Net-zero means killing pensioner

๐ I am a proud member of the Climate Cult - what about you? ๐
๐ Did you watch U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubioโs address at the Munich Security Conference? ๐คทโโ๏ธ So apparently we are all part of a cult - I had no idea. ๐ฆ As a reminder, a cult is a social group organized around a particular leader, belief system, or ideology that is often considered unconventional, highly controlling, or outside mainstream norms. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ Really? Climate? ๐ Anyway, Iโve been a member since 2022 - and you?

๐ Back from Carbonfuture Team Days and I am pumped!
๐ Like many of you, I work from home. I love being able to live in different countries (Italy, Portugal, and Brazil) and being there to see my daughter grow up. ๐ป It does, however, come with clear downsides: I only get to see my colleagues on a tiled screen and there is rarely time for non-work chatter. ๐ฒ That is why I am always super excited about the yearly (now biyearly) Carbonfuture Team Days hosted in the picturesque and beautiful Freiburg in the Black Forest. ๐ Thi

๐ A love letter to nature carbon removals ๐
๐ For too long, I have ignored you. Yet there you are: reliably removing 2 gigatons of CO2 year on year, while providing countless co-benefits to forests, animals, farmers, and us humans. ๐ช Yes, we need to figure out how to compensate our emissions for the long-term. But this will take us years, yeah decades to scale up. In the meantime, you can help us lower warming at this crucial moment in time. โ
I donโt need to tell you how to do your job: it comes natural to you. You

Jack changed my mind. Will he change yours?
โฝ I used to have a pretty clear opinion on the role of oil and gas on the way to net zero: boycott and phase out basically. ๐ซฃ This is a very commonly held stance in the climate bubble. It is also one that is not particularly helpful. ๐ Of course, we need to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible. โ ๏ธ However, given the massive dependence of humanity on fossil fuels, there can be no net zero without decarbonising this sector. โ๏ธ And not all actors are the same: some ar

โ๏ธ Without Like-for-Like, net-zero does not stop warming
๐ณ There, I said it. A statement that will lead to a lot of nodding for some, and fury for othersโฆ ๐ It is also the takeaway from a fascinating paper just released by Carbon Gap and authored by Sylvain Delerce . ๐ค Quick recap: What is the Like-for-Like (LfL) principle? From the paper: โLike-for-Like neutralisation requires balancing anthropogenic GHG sources with removals by sinks of similar or greater permanence than the carbon pool the emissions originate from and / o

๐ข๏ธ โZero carbon barrel of oilโ - really? ๐ข๏ธ
๐คฌ That sentence triggers me tooโฆ ๐ค But - as so often in climate - reality is not black or white. The slogan is wrong, but the directionality isnโt. ๐ Fossil fuels, like it or not, will be with us for decades to come (although definitely not forever as stated in this video - phase out is coming for you, O&G!). ๐ฅ Billions of barrels will be pumped and used, gigatons of CO2 and methane emitted. So the carbon intensity of each barrel does really matter. A ton is a ton after a

๐ค Imagine you sat on 15Mt of wet residues and your goal was to do whatever is best for the climate? What would you do?
๐ญ According to a recent study: BECCS / Bionenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage. All the way. It delivers around double the climate benefit of the next best solution: animal feed substitution. ๐งโ๐ฌ A bit more context on this fascinating study: the authors looked at a concrete use case, namely two Dutch coal-fired power plants to be converted to 100% BECCS. ๐ The residues in question were pellets from the U.S. and bagasse from Brazil. It then looked at the overall climate

๐ข๏ธ We need to talk about making cleaner fossil fuels ๐ข๏ธ
๐ง Yesterday, I shared how the energy transition looks unstoppable, and all the incredible data from Nat Bullard to prove it. At the same time, it is a hard fact that the world will take years, maybe decades to wean itself off fossil fuels. ๐ก If weโre going to burn oil anyway in the short to medium term, the difference between high-leakage, high-intensity barrels and cleaner ones is real climate damage avoided. ๐ด The common approach in the climate bubble is to dismiss any

๐จ๐ญ Switzerland's leading the way on BUILDING carbon removal.

๐ฐ Is geoengineering having its moment?
Finally! ๐ฃ The Guardian , a mainstream media outlet historically skeptical on the topic of geoengineering, has published four op-eds in the last month, all calling for a drastic change in our approach to geoengineering. ๐ I was glad to see this editorial decision. The more I learn about the topic, the more I believe the current stigma around it is not serving humanity well. ๐ฌ No one here is arguing we should deploy commercial scale geoengineering today. ๐ The energy transition looks unstoppable - this deck shows why ๐
๐ Nat Bullard just released his annual decarbonisation deck. 200 carefully curated graphs that provide you with a full overview of how decarbonisation is progressing. It is the single most insightful deck I see each year. ๐ I highly recommend checking out the full deck. What stood out to me: ๐จ๐ณ It is all about China: 40% more electricity than EU and US combined (16). Emissions flat to falling (22). Half of all energy investment globally is China (67). Added more battery

๐ฃ My familyโs carbon footprint in 2025 was 17.4t - what was yours? ๐ฃ
๐ Just like for a business or government, we all have to take responsibility and minimise our impact on the planet. The first step is awareness and data. Only then can we act on it. I have to admit, 2025 is the first year I ran the numbers for my whole family - and they are higher than Iโd like, particularly in a year where we: โก๏ธ Moved into a flat with a heat pump and renewable energy โก๏ธ Reduced air travel considerably โก๏ธ Switched all investments to be ESG aligned โก๏ธ Mainta

๐ What role can CDR play in the โSurvival of the Greenestโ?
โ
The green transition represents a huge opportunity for countries to promote economic growth. Those who succeed will reap the rewards for decades to come. Those who ignore it, are likely to fall behind. ๐๏ธ Markets alone will not be sufficient: strong, coordinated industrial policy is needed to create and promote these new sectors. ๐ Amir Lebdioui is the author of this compelling book and also the Director of TIDE Centre, University of Oxford . ๐ต $3.6b of private capital has been invested into CDR between 2021 and 2025 ๐ต
๐ง However, one could argue that the money is not being allocated efficiently. Hereโs why: ๐ญ Technological concentration: 61% of all investment to date went to DACCS. While BiCRS follows with just 15% (of which Biochar Carbon Removal accounts for 5%). These numbers stand in stark contrast with deliveries, where BiCRS accounts for >95% while DACCS <0.1%. ๐ Geographical concentration: the U.S. and Switzerland account for 77% of all investment. The Global South for just 2%. A
